Looking back on 2019…

 

Another creative & productive year has come & gone so here’s looking back on what happened in 2019…

CLASSES & WORKSHOPS

THE BAKEHOUSE STUDIO All through the year I continued to hold regular weekly watercolour & drawing classes at the inspirational Inner West community studio space, The Bakehouse Studio in Marrickville.

We covered a wide range styles, techniques & topics in my monthly workshops with themes including: ‘Narrow Shapes’; ‘Techniques & Textures’; ‘Mixing the Darks’; ‘Buildings & Structures’; ‘From the Sea’; ‘Lots of Leaves’; ‘Exploring Colour’; ‘Portraits: Part 1’ & ‘All Things Festive’.

The year ended with the annual Bakehouse Studio Christmas Celebration & Show with a selection once again of work by my students which really showcased the standard of work they’d achieved during the year.

ACQUIRE @ DESIGN In April this year I began teaching a monthly Sunday afternoon watercolour workshop at the wonderful light-filled, creative shop/studio, acquire @ Design located in the eclectic Inner West suburb of Newtown.

Workshop topics included: ‘Easy Travel Sketching’; ‘Flowers Made Easy’; ‘Winter Fruits’; ‘Australian Landscapes’; ‘Windows & Doors’ & ‘Festive Flowers’.

SPECIALTY COFFEE CURATORS In July I was very pleased to be invited to hold an ‘Easy Watercolours’ workshop as part of the inaugural Curators’ Community Market held by local business, Specialty Coffee Curators, at their large converted warehouse premises in Marrickville.

MADE LOCAL GALLERY & STUDIO Over the weekend of October 26 & 27 I held two casual drop-in watercolour workshops at this local Marrickville gallery in tandem with a pop-up exhibition of recent work I was doing there with local potter, Lou McCallum.

DANAS DELI & CAFÉ This well-known Marrickville Greek Café in Sydney’s Inner West was the perfect location for two Friday morning watercolour workshops I held there in November & December with the theme of ‘Food of Greece’.

ONE-ON-ONE CLASSES

All through 2019 I continued giving personal tuition to some students in regular one-on-one painting and drawing classes and took them on excursions to gallery exhibitions and various locations for en plein air drawing and painting.

EXHIBITIONS & EVENTS

2019 ASMA NATIONAL AWARDS This was held in June at the Ewart Gallery in Willoughby. As an exhibiting member of the Australian Society of Miniature Art, I entered two of my miniature watercolours in the ‘Abstract’ category & received a Highly Commended Award for one of them.

SINGAPORE I took my watercolour travel sketching kit when I spent a week in Singapore at the end of June where I was able to do some en plein air painting.

EDGE SYDENHAM On the weekend of August 3 & 4 as an artist at The Bakehouse Studio, I participated in the Inner west Council’s Edge Creative Trail by doing watercolour demonstrations & having some of my work on display.

2019 WYONGAH PROGRESS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL EXHIBITION In September this year I again supported this Central Coast community exhibition by exhibiting some of my recent watercolour works.

10th GREENWAY ART PRIZE I was thrilled to be accepted as a finalist in this highly competitive annual exhibition held in October with a composite watercolour work.

POP-UP EXHIBITION On the last weekend of October I held a joint Pop-up exhibition with local potter, Lou McCallum, featuring many of my recent watercolour works.

EDGE NEWTOWN On the weekend of November 9 & 10 as an artist at acquire @ Design, I participated in the Inner west Council’s Edge Creative Trail by doing watercolour demonstrations & having some of my work on display.

THE BAKEHOUSE STUDIO CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION & SHOW As a regular artist at The Bakehouse I participated in this great annual event on December 7 showing some of the work I had created during the year as well as my students’ work.

THE YEAR AHEAD...

2019 was a very busy but highly enjoyable year of painting, teaching and exhibiting and a special thanks goes to all my loyal students & local suppliers. On Wednesday 5 February I’ll be starting up my regular weekly watercolour & drawing classes/workshops again at The Bakehouse Studio in Marrickville.

The first Sunday watercolour workshop for 2020 at Newtown venue, acquire @ Design, will be on 23 February and plan on doing more workshops at other local and out-of-town venues during 2020.

I will also continue this year with my one-on-one classes and will participate in exhibitions once again throughout the year.

I’m looking forward to another creative year and whatever 2020 might bring.
